Privacy Policy

Evenly (the “app”, “we”, “us”) is operated by In The Trenches LLC. This policy covers the Evenly mobile app, the evenly.net website, and the web page we use to show a guest their share during a real-time split (described in section 9).

Evenly does not hold, move, or transfer money. It is a record-keeper. When you tap a button to pay someone, Evenly hands you off to your own payment app, where you move your own money. We are not a party to that payment and we never receive it.

1. Information you give us

Your account

• Name, so the people you split with know who you are.
• Email address and/or mobile phone number, used to sign you in and to secure your account.
• Profile photo, if you choose to add one.
• Payment handles (for example your Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, or UPI username), if you choose to add them. These are shown to people who owe you, so they can pay you in their own app. They are optional, and you can remove them at any time.

What you record in the app

• Expenses and their amounts, currencies, dates, descriptions, categories and how they were split; the groups and friends you split with; comments; and the settlements you record.
• Receipt images, if you attach a photo to an expense or use scan-to-itemize.

2. Information we collect automatically

• A device installation identifier, and a push notification token if you allow notifications, so we can deliver the alerts you asked for.
• Technical data needed to serve your requests, including your IP address at the network layer and basic request logs. We use these to operate and secure the service, not to build a profile of you.
• Diagnostics and product analytics, described in section 5.

3. Information from your device, only with your permission

• Contacts. If you grant contacts access, Evenly reads your address book on your device to help you find people to split with. Your contacts are not sent to our servers and are not stored by us. You can use Evenly without granting this, and add people manually instead.
• Camera and photo library. Used only to attach a receipt to an expense, to scan a receipt, or to set your profile photo.
• Notifications. Used only to send you alerts about your own activity, such as an expense you were added to or a reminder you set. You can decline, and Evenly still works.

4. SMS and text messages

If you sign in with a phone number, we send you a one-time verification code by text message (or, for Indian numbers, by WhatsApp).

• Message frequency varies. You receive a verification code only when you request one by signing in or signing up.
• Message and data rates may apply.
• Reply STOP to any message to opt out and stop receiving verification codes. Reply START to opt back in. Reply HELP for help, or email us at support@evenly.net.
• We do not sell, rent, or share your mobile phone number, your SMS opt-in, or your consent with any third party or affiliate for their own marketing purposes. Your mobile information is used solely to deliver the verification codes you request. We do not send marketing text messages.

5. Diagnostics and product analytics

These are two separate things, and you control them differently.

Crash diagnostics tell us that the app broke and where in the code. They are how a bug that hits you actually gets fixed, so they stay on. Product analytics tell us which parts of the app get used, which helps us decide what to build. Those you can switch off.

Both are deliberately limited, in the same ways:

• You are identified only by an opaque account identifier. Your email address is never sent, in any form.
• We record that something happened, never what it was. Amounts, balances, expense descriptions, people’s names, email addresses, phone numbers and contacts are never included.

Turning product analytics off is a switch in the app’s privacy settings. It does not reduce anything else about how Evenly works for you. We keep crash diagnostics on because switching them off would mean a crash that affects you is one we never learn about, and a crash report carries no expense data, no names, and no email address.

6. How we use your information

• To run the app: recording expenses, calculating balances, and showing who owes whom.
• To sign you in and keep your account secure, including sending verification codes.
• To read a receipt you chose to scan, and turn it into line items you can split.
• To convert between currencies for display, using daily reference rates.
• To send notifications and reminders you have asked for.
• To provide support when you contact us.
• To detect, prevent and investigate abuse, fraud and technical problems.
• To meet legal obligations.

If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on the following legal bases: performance of a contract (running the service you signed up for), legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention, improving the app), consent (contacts, camera, notifications, and analytics, each of which you control), and legal obligation where one applies.

7. Who we share it with

We share personal information only with the service providers below, only for the purposes described, and only to the extent needed. We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.

Every provider above is bound by contract to use your information only to perform that service for us, and never for their own purposes. A current list of the providers we use, by name, is available on request — email support@evenly.net and we will send it.

Currency rates are not on this list, deliberately. Evenly converts between currencies using daily reference rates, which our server fetches as a plain table of numbers. Nothing about you, your amounts or your account is sent to get them, so the providers are not recipients of your information.

We may also disclose information:

• To the people you split with. See section 8 — this is how a shared-expense app works.
• When the law requires it, such as a valid legal request, or to protect the rights, safety and property of our users, the public, or us. ⚑ We can only ever provide what we actually hold, which is why the next point matters.
• In a business transfer. If Evenly is acquired or merged, your information may transfer with it. This policy continues to apply until you are told otherwise.

Name-only friends: you decide how much we know about the people you split with

You do not have to give us anyone else’s details to split with them. Adding someone as a name-only friend stores exactly that: a name. No email address, no phone number, no account, no profile. It is enough for Evenly to do the arithmetic and keep your side of the record straight.

This is a deliberate feature, not a limitation. Some people are glad to track a shared expense without a partner, a family member or a housemate becoming a record on someone else’s server. Data we never collect cannot be lost in a breach, cannot be requested, and cannot be disclosed. If you would rather we held nothing about the person you are splitting with, use the name-only friend feature — it is built for exactly that, and everything else in Evenly works normally with them.

8. What the people you split with can see

Evenly is shared by design. When you add someone to an expense or a group, or they add you:

• They can see your name and profile photo.
• They can see the expenses, amounts, descriptions, comments and balances that you share with them. They cannot see your other groups, your other friends, or expenses they are not part of.
• They can see any payment handles you have added, so they can pay you.
• A shared expense belongs to everyone in it. If you delete your account, the expense records stay in the accounts of the people you shared them with, because those are their records too. Your personal details are removed from them.

9. Real-time splits

When you run a live split (at a dinner table, a checkout counter, anywhere a group is settling up together), Evenly can create a link that shows each person just their own share, in a web browser, without them installing anything. That link:

• is opaque and cannot be guessed from another link;
• shows only that one split, and is read-only;
• expires automatically; and
• is never indexed by search engines.

A guest who opens the link does not create an account. If you add them by name so the split adds up, that name is stored in your account, as your record of who was at the table.

10. Where your data is stored

Evenly’s database and file storage are hosted in the European Union (Paris). Some of the service providers listed in section 7 operate in the United States or elsewhere, so your information may be processed outside the country you live in. Where we transfer personal data out of the EEA or the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards, including the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses.

11. How long we keep it

• Your account data is kept for as long as your account exists.
• When you delete your account, we immediately remove your email address, phone number, profile photo, payment handles and friend code, reduce your name to a first name only, and delete your sign-in credentials. What remains is the shared expense history in other people’s accounts, as described in section 8.
• Receipt images are deleted when you delete the expense they belong to, or your account.
• Real-time split links stop working at their expiry time, and the records behind them are deleted within a day of that.
• Notification delivery records (that a push was sent, and whether it succeeded) are deleted after 30 days.
• Infrastructure logs — the request and error logs our hosting provider keeps so the service can be run and debugged — are retained by that provider under its own retention settings, measured in days rather than months. We do not copy them elsewhere, and we do not use them to build a profile of you.

12. Security

• All traffic between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS).
• Our database enforces row-level security: the server itself will not return another person’s data to your account, independently of what the app asks for.
• Every third-party key and secret lives on our servers. None is shipped inside the app.
• Receipt images are held in access-controlled storage, not on a public URL.
• You can add Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode lock to the app in Settings.

No service can promise perfect security, but if we ever discover a breach affecting your personal data, we will notify you and the relevant regulators as the law requires.

13. Your rights and choices

• Access and correct your profile at any time in the app.
• Export your data — Evenly can produce a CSV of your expenses and a full JSON backup of your account.
• Delete your account and its personal data from Account → Danger zone.
• Withdraw a permission — contacts, camera, notifications and analytics are each independently revocable, in the app or in your phone’s settings.

If you are in the UK or the European Economic Area

You have the rights the UK GDPR and EU GDPR give you: to access your data, to have it corrected, to have it erased, to restrict or object to how we process it, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time for anything you consented to. Section 6 sets out the legal basis we rely on for each purpose. You can also complain to your data protection authority — for most people that is the regulator in the country where you live.

If you are in California

You have the right to know what we collect and why, to request deletion, to request a copy, and not to be treated differently for exercising those rights. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under California law, so there is no sale to opt out of.

If you are in India

You have rights of access, correction, erasure and grievance redressal under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act. Contact us at the address in section 16.

To exercise any right that is not already a button in the app, email support@evenly.net. We will respond within the time the applicable law allows, and we may need to verify that the request came from you before we act on it — particularly for deletion, which cannot be undone.

14. Children

Evenly is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

15. Changes to this policy

We will update this page when what we collect or who we share it with changes, and we will change the “last updated” date above. If a change is significant, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
